Poorer, because the cultural and intellectual contributions of black people would have been lost. (No jazz, no hip-hop, no stop lights, no open-heart surgery...) More agriculture and big farms, probably.

It was not actually 'abolished' (originally) but rather was 'proclaimed away' by Lincoln, which is a very dubious (legal?) way to do such a thing. I think that the country would
be tremendously different, and not in a positive way, if the pecular institution (southern term) had not been discontinued.
I do also believe it would have (soon) died a natural death if the South had been allowed to go their own way in peace. It had
already gone by the wayside in England, without civil war to speed it along.

I cannot even imagine. The abolishment of slavery also helped pave the way for womens rights in this country. I think we would all be hurting if it still existed.

WELL, the civil war would have completely ripped the country apart...there is no way unity would last...africans would've rose up more violently...creating a three way war...Then south america would not be the name of a contintent but the sourthern 1/2 of the country. There would be no America!!!
