The residency is a 3-5 year educational program which helps you specialize in a particular branch of medicine (internal med, psychiatry, surgery, pediatrics etc etc.).

Depending on the program you opt for it can take anywhere between 3-5 years.
Approximately, the following durations hold good for most programs.
Int medicine: 3 years
Psychiatry: 4 years
Surgery: 5 years

Even though they do pay the residents a stipend from 35,000 to 45,000 dollars per annum depending on the residency year and the program, the real moolah does not start coming in until you are done with the residency and have started an active practise.

Residency is the training that you go through in order to specialize. It can be as short as 3 years, or as long as over 7 years. You are supposed to be limited to 80 hours per week, but unfortunately alot of residency programs don't follow that guideline, even though they are supposed to. You earn relatively little money during residency- it works out to under $10/hour. You get paid more once you finish residency, but it's not nearly as much as it used to be. That's bad, because you can easily acquire more than $100,000 in debt during college & med school, & that can be hard to pay off. If you're looking for a career where you can earn alot of money, stay away from medicine.

You get to work at a hospital treating patients to give you more experience in your specialty. The length depends on what your specialty is. If it is complicated like hand surgery it can be several years. It if is easier like general practitioner a year will do it.
You get paid but not a lot. You typically work long hours (although that was improved recently after they found overworked residents were making serious errors from fatigue).
