You have something running and writing to your harddrive. Reboot, rightclick and close as many icons you can that are in your system tray. Then start the defrag.

Chances are it's because some other process is causing the defrag to keep restarting. A good solution is to reboot while tapping the F8 key to boot into safe mode. Once there, try defragging again. That ought to do it.

Not sure what this has to do with Programming & Design.
Sounds like a bad hard drive. I'd buy a new one and copy the old to the new.
You could try a third parth defrag utility on it like Norton.

Hit f8 (repeatedly until boot menu appears) and start your computer in safe mode. Repeated calls on the harddrive are restarting your computer. Running defrag in safe mode should work for you.

run scandisk first. it will take a long time so start it like after dinner, then let it take as long as it needs,
the fat table gets rewritten then and your defrag will go much quicker.
do your best to delete everything you dont need.
including all txt files. clear out the cache in IE and reset it to 5 megs instead of the 5 gigs its probably set at.

this always works for me
run disk scan first to get the errors off of the disk. set it to "thorough" and "fix errors automatically".
if all errors are fixed then you can defrag. otherwise no.
i have heard there are better programs than diskscan but i haven't tried them.

Have you closed down everything except your browser? That usually helps. But it is normal for it to do that at first. It will speed up usually. Mine used to do that...until I got a new laptop!!
