I'm a huge Python fan, and I still don't understand why the spaceship was in there. I'm assuming it was to satisfy Terry Gilliam, and get some of his work into the final project. On the TV series, his animation really didn't serve a purpose but it worked because the sketches were all over the place anyway. But in Brian, which was a character-driven film with a real plotline, the spaceship was more of an interruption.

Monty Python is geat and so is that movie...
I think the spaceship is actually a direct reference to the "chariot of the gods", which some people think may have been just that, a spaceship.

They needed a way to break up the monotony of the story and speed things alon. Plus there is the whole, is jesus a space alien thing? And the whole Space Ivaders video game thing. But basically it was to give you "something completely different."
