if there is a way to hook up a vcr to a computer and transfer the movie to dvd? I was told that there is a way and I have no idea if this is true or not.

Yes it requires a special product to do so. I believe it is called Dazzle and costs like 100 bucks.

there's various windows tv cards that'll do this.

Look up WinFast and see if it'll meet your needs, this card has an RCA video input. To get audio I expect you'll have to go from the VCR audio out to the line in on your sound card.

Then when you get this all working, record the tape to your hard drive and then burn to dvd.

no but if you have a DVD recorder then you can transfer a movie from tape to DVD.
