I was 12 and my parents wanted me to go to a dinner with them. They'd been invited 2 weeks earlier and the family we were going to see had a kid my age, so they thot I'd like it.

We got to their house around 5.30 in the afternoon. Was a country farm and it looked like a real dump, junk everywhere. We'd never been there before and I could tell my parents were a bit stunned by the mess. Mom rang the bell. Nobody answered. She rang again and finally, a chubby guy opened the door. Was obvious he'd had a nap recently, coz his hair looked really weird. He didn't recognize us at all and Mom just stuttered, so he called his wife. She came running and yelled: "OH what a SURPRISE! How nice of you to come visit and bring yer family!"

Mom had finally pulled herself together and told the lady that she'd actually invited us to dinner. Lady got all pale but tried to sound like she was in total control, invited us in and chatted like a hyped squirrel.

Meanwhile, her hubby took out a huge pork steak from the freezer and discretely put it in the nuker. He set the timer for 45 minutes, full effect. Mom and Dad got some drinks and I was ushered into a small room to meet the kid-my-age. He turned out to be a bleeding looney, but that's another story.

"Dinner"- served at 8.30 pm and I was starving - was that steak, minced & baked in the oven w/o any spices whatsoever, a handful of sloppy french fries for 6 persons, 2 tablespoons of ketchup and half a bottle of stale coke. We left as early as possible. Mom and Dad laughed all the way home. I didn't. We never went back.

I'm allergic to chicken and eggs, and pretty much everything had one of those things in it, and people were telling me to put mind over matter and "just try a little bit." I had politely let the hostess know about my allergies beforehand, too; she just didn't care. I drank a lot of wine when I was tired of filling up on bread. It made the other guests more interesting.
