I am sure there are some who can play faster than Eddie. But Eddie invented finger tapping on the neck of the guitar, technical aspects of how the solid body guitar is designed, and even invented his own amp. Is there anyone who has done more for rock music than him that you can think of?

there is a ton of great guitarist , but eddies the best in my book. he used to play backwards in the day so no one could see hes style . many bands were influenced by him. he started a whole new scene in the 80s.

He did not invent the tap, he popularaized it, and has always been highly overrated. I think Les Paul started the tap technique as well as palmmuting looong before Eddie was around

Jason Becker and Marty Friedman are both much better and had a band called Cacophony when they were only 17, much much faster than Van Halen and dead on accurate as well.

also, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai just to name a few in the Virtuoso department

Yes, of course, some of them:

Joe Satraini
Al DiMeola
Paco de Lucia
Steve Vai
Steve Morse
Vinnie Moore
Yngwie Malmsteen

That being said, Eddie is indeed an amazing guitar player

That's like asking what the best food is.... it's all a matter of taste. Looking thru this list here I see some omissions tho.... JOHNNY WINTER, STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN, BUDDY GUY, RANDY RHODES, JIMMY PAGE, SANTANA, and DAVID GILMOUR come to mind immediately. I also love a guy named JOHN BUTLER (Trio) who can play about anything w/ strings. Saw him a few times & was blown away every time. His records don't convey his true skill. See him live!! Also, FRANK MARINO! A friend described his double live cd released last year as "a vulgar display of power...". One of the most underrated guitarists ever, like ZAPPA.
Peace~

I am a big fan of Yngwie Malmsteen and Joe Satriani. I consider their technique outstanding. Still is very hard to tell which guitarist is the best. You need more criteria.

Another great guitarist is Andres Segovia (well known for his classical guitar approaches).

Depends on the genre. Wllie Nelson is a great guitarist. Clapton is great. BB King, the best at blues. I could go on, but what is the point? Your question is like someone saying, " Is _ _ _ _ _, the best song ever?"
Fill in the blank with whatever you like; it's the same question, with the same possible endless answers.

There's probably a million better than van Halen. He's nothing extraordinary...certainly no Hendrix.
