I was wondering just how much expanding foam is supposed to be squeezed into the gaps around the window frame that were apparent when my girlfriends windows were installed. I found it difficult to believe that you should still light and a lot of gap outside just before the application of the plastic cover on top of the frame. The windows were filled with some expanding foam which the workman said was to insulate around the frame and to hold the window tight in place. I would like to know if this is correct because im worried about noise and insulation. Thankyou.

I think I may have worded this question incorrectly. I am aware that there is going to be a gap between window frame and woodwork that has to be filled. What I was wondering is, how thouroughly should that gap be filled because it seemed as though the workmen just filled it enough to keep the window steady so that it wouldnt wobble when opening or closing it. There still seemed to be a fair amount light coming through the gap from outside when they placed a plastic cover at the top of the window frame hiding the gap and the foam. I wondered if this was normal or whether they were doing a bad job and cutting corners. Thankyou all for your answers so far

whenever i fit windows i put foam all around so there is no gap or light coming through. The window should be mechanically fixed using the correct frame fixings, before the foam goes in.

the recess between inner block and outer brick is normal, the gap can be filled with all sorts of insulation , when you take away the window frame I've known of woodwork holding the frame in place, you screw the frame into place once secure you then re glaze, you then seal around the frame and check for a secure fit, refit the window still, the main point is to check the measurements at lease three times it is not a hard job to compleat, ask a friend as well to measure

Hey am into the same business. Well for a double glazed glass there is a vaccum between those 2 glasses. that reduces noise levels and also radiation to a very high extent. There is about 5-7mm gap between the glasses in double glazing.
