yes, u have broken speakers.
i have broken probably 10 speakers (im a big computer nerd, what can i say?) and a subwoofer in the past 15 years, so dont feel bad. there are tons of good ones that are higher end (ie more expensive but less likely to break such as harmon kardon, the apple ones, those are GREAT)

If your speakers have no circuit breakers I think they can be overdriven to the point of knocking out of alignment the speaker coil which then will rub against the magnet or sides making raspy distorted sounds. No way I know this can be repaired by a common person you most probably will have to buy new speakers. Next time get speakers that are rated twice what your amp can put out.

yeah, its possible the the speakers are turned up to there max, and the db from the sound card is increased then just to much power going to them. boom..
its very easy to blow up speakers these days.
