Try different color rocks on the bottom and get a small plant. They also have backgrounds you can put on the back of your tank.

For a small tank like your's, I'd suggest buy a small bag of gravel and put them on the bottom of your tank. Make the gravel leveled, meaning having a lower level at the front and gets higher as you go, this gives the tank some kind of dimension. Also add a shrub or two of aquatic plants, I personally prefer live ones, because the fake ones just look ugly, but if you're inexperienced then go with the fake. Also add some decorations like a small piece or drift wood or whatever decorations they have at a pet store. Just be sure to get everything from a pet store, not found objects, and be sure to wash them very well before you put them in your tank. Good luck =)

You can get some really good natural looking features for tanks now in any good pet store, rocks caves ships driftwood pond weed or even little funny statues of scuba diving squirals and junk.I bought a plastic hollow log with seaweed on it,its really colourful.I also got 2 rocks and put a flat rock on top of them to make a tunnel and then i put a little plastic mermaid on top and some plastic weed on the side. You can also get differant coloured pebbles for the tank bed I have multicoloured ones.I painted a sea scene on a piece of paper and stuck it to the back of my tank it really livens it up.I also have some live weed in my tank its good for cleanig the water and when I'm away my fish can eat it.You can also get battery powered filters for fresh water tanks that way you dont have to clean it for 4 weeks and you only have to tske off and replace the top 1/4 of the water.
Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try getting some barley straw extract, does a great job of cleaning up any nastiness that might form in the tank. You can find it at any fish supply store.

You can get lots of small ornaments at any pet store. Caves, statues, driftwood, bubbling things that run off of your pump. (you can get splitters so that it will run your pump and the bubble thing)
Also, it might be nice to have some live plants instead of the fake ones. They're a little harder to maintain, but look much nicer, and they're healthier for the fish too!

Aquarium backgrounds really add a lot of life to your tank. The fish appreciate it as well.
