First of all, what is his living situation -- if his parents are footing the bill -- I can assure you (as a single parent, and yes, I do have two adult children), that I would be ANGRY to the EXTREME That MY hard earned cash is being WASTED and he is sitting around the house with no job and no income and sucking off my income while I have to work so hard to keep the household up and then come home to the mess!
SO ... he needs to buck up, take on adult responsibilities, and if he does not want to start college now, then he needs to get a job, and GET OUT of the parent's house! The parent(s) have done enough. That is what being an adult is. Make the decision before the classes start --- so that the parent(s) can get the money back they have already invested in the education and mitigate their financial losses.

Well, if he does not start now, chances are very good that he never will. He should give it a try for at least one semester now.
But his parents have already paid for it, and it would be really rude of him to not go now.

theres nothing wrong with waiting. he can just call the admission office and let them know. He will have to reregister next year. but they will prolly keep his information on file. you might want to ask your friend why he wants to wait. i know plenty of people who want to wait but then they just keep putting it off and putting it off. not everyone is meant for college, but if he really wants to have a career in a field where college is necessary, then he needs to decide for himself on what to do.
