To add another layer to your question (which is very good btw), why don't we herald the heroes that are perhaps more local? One of the problems with our society is that we want heroes badly, much like we need a supra-figure to guide us and keep us out of harms way. The reality is (I believe) we need to make ourselves heroes and stop putting the responsibility for action on others. How often do we hear about some charismatic leader dying (Lincoln, Ghandi, Kennedy, MLK, Benigno Aquino, Mother Theresa to name just a few), but their message lives on? The only way this can happen is if people - ordinary people - pick up the gauntlet and continue to promote the values amplified by these larger-than-life individuals.
We may just find ourselves "larger-than-life."

That's an *excellent* question! I don't know why we place more value, effort, time, and money of celebs instead of real life heroes. I'd rather read about Chuck Yeager & others like him than any actor in Hollywood.
And I'm not just speaking about high profile heroes either! I think we should find a way to honor the heroes that are much closer to home too!!

I agree with the first person's answer as to us gossiping about celebrities and invading their privacy. Yet celebrities know this will happen as they become well known. It's the media and photographers that invade their privacy. That should be stopped.
But I do agree with our real heros not having the spot light. Many don't want it because they don't think they are heros. They are just doing their jobs, like police and firemen, and so are just being nice like they know they should be. But I would love to watch an evening news program that just tells us of the good that is going on in the world. Children being found, people letting Katrina victims into their homes and helping them get jobs, firemen saving lives, etc. Today in Wisconsin an elderly, disabled man received an electronic wheelchair from an anonymous person. He had his driver's license taken away and started to ride his lawnmower around town to get to the store and such. The police cited him a couple of times for driving it in the roads. An anonymous bought him wheelchair and had the police department deliver to his house. We might never know that person's name but at least he/she saw it on TV and that elderly man thanks him and said he wanted to give that person a big kiss and hug. That person is a hero for that elderly man.

Of course there are! They are the parents who put their needs aside to care for their children (even after a 24 hour bug, 15 loads of laundry and NO sleep). They are the firemen and women who enter a burning dwelling intent on saving lives. They are the police officers who respond to dangerous situations in order to protect the innocents. They are the EMT's who step in when the situation has not been secured because someone needs first aid. They are the soldiers who carry their brothers and sisters to a hospital or to a coffin, even if it is under enemy fire. They are the still, small voices that speak up for right even though the loudest voices are proclaiming that what is wrong is great! Enough said?

You know, I bet you most people barely remember the sacrifices the NY firefighters and police made trying to save lives 5 years ago. They are so concerned with the war in Iraq, they don;t seem to remember the heroes who lost their lives

Because we are supposed to honor money, and beauty and fame over real values like honesty, creativity, strength and courage
The last time we had a hero he was killed ....pick one
Lennon
MLK
Gandhi
JFK
the list goes on and on.... If you rock the boat too much you get shot!

If we took care of them as we do our celebrities, we would fire them when they stepped out of line, fire them when they made or lost money for us, and talk about them in all our gossip rags, make their lives miserable, and give them no privacy...would you really want that for a hero??? I wouldn't. Good luck
