Actually, they are. It's just stored in an area of the brain that is not readily accessible by almost all people.

As your brain grows, certain parts become more active and other parts fade into the background - but all of your experiences and memories are still there.

PS Ignore all of the people saying that "your brain isn't developed yet" - they obviously have no idea what they are talking about. Check out a book called Comparative Vertebrate Neuroanatomy: Evolution and Adaptation by Ann Butler (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0471210056 ) and it will answer all of your questions.

I don't think we know that newborns don't remember being born - they can't yet tell us about their memories, at least, and that's our usual way of measuring whether someone remembers something. By the time children CAN communicate about memories, they've had a lot of new experiences to make birth just a distant memory.

Not only has that part of the brain not developed yet, but I can imagine it doesn't develop until later for a reason.

I can't imagine being a baby! The idea of birth, in itself, has got to be traumatic. Think about it. You're in a nice, warm, cushy place, and you're squeezed, or pulled, into a cold, bright place where people are poking, prodding and handing you around. I'd be terrified.

And babies are helpless for a long time. That has to be frustrating, to be upset and can't tell your mom what you want. I, for one, am glad we have no memory of it.

what event?

i remember a light at the end of the tunnel some pain and a huge headache then fluid...

then suddenly i was smacking into things.. and folks laughing and tossing me around....

from there on out it was memories of potty training, yuck! having to wiene me from the bottle.. (not beer now! baby!) stealing the bottle and putting chocolate milk in it... and getting yelled at then that one faithful day... gramma taking the bottle.... and yelling at me about growing up and dealing with loss.. then

SMASH! brown baby bottle glass all over the kitchen floor!

then my life changed.. i was no longer a child! i lost my innocense that day.

i soon found another one he he.... same story... all over again.

then my first birthdays i remember.... i couldn't understand what was going on.. it's like wait a second i'm a bad kid and i get toys? what's this fire on this cake thingy? ouch! wow fire is cool can i set fire to stuff and things?

so on..

first holidays i remember..

first xmas i recall taking my sisters barbies and popping their heads off and switching them around with ken and all.

and on and on.

you get the drift.

:D

some do recall the event some don't.. i don't know the exact reason... i don't know if i do or not that's just what i remember before i could remember anything.

i can't spell and spell check smacks of effort. especially went it can't figure out my bad spelling!

Without memory of being born?? Because their brains and cognitive skills aren't fully developed yet. It's as simple as that.

I can't remember anything I did before I was 5. Do people have memories of when they were inside the womb too?

I reckon the memories are there. They're just not easily accessible. I often catch myself saying "I'd forgotten all about that!" Proof enough, for me, that just because I can't recall something doesn't mean the memory isn't locked away inside me.

that part of the brain hasn't fully developed yet. babies have a somewhat short term memory because the brain continues to develop as they get older. why do you think they're entertained by flashing lights and sounds in the same pattern over and over again?

Do you want to rember that series of events in details? But honestly I think it is due to the fact that the brain is so undeveloped at that posint in time that you dont have the capasity too.
