Coeliac disease is fairly common and affects about 1 in 100 people in the UK.
Check Coeliac.co.uk for full details.
It can also become very serious if left undiagnosed. If left it can lead to severe anaemia and osteoporosis.
Common symptoms are indigestion, bloating are diarrhoea (especially after eating bread, pasta, pastry and other foods with high gluten content) also unexplained weight loss and tiredness.
Wheat, barley and rye are the main foods to avoid. Wheat and wheat derivatives are in many processed foods, and even soft drinks. Most foods now have allergy advice on the packet and will say if they contain gluten.
You friend should see her doctor for a test. I waited until I was really ill before I went to my doctor, having suffered years of indigestion and terrible wind, and it has taken me a year to recover, but now I feel better than I can remember. It is well worth sacrificing pizzas, sandwiches and the like.
P.S for TweetyBird - Coeliac is the British spelling. Celiac the American.

My son has this disease, he couldn't eat wheat, rye, barley or oats. It was trial and error with some foods, as he couldn't tolerate many things.
Most coeliacs are just gluten intolerent.
I found the best way to feed him was with all fresh foods, meat veg and fruit which he thrived on.
His bread buscuits pasta etc were all prescription products, you can buy so many different gluten free foods in the local supermarket these days, it's not really a problem nowadays.
My son was 15months when he was diagnosed and he's 27 now
I wish your friend well

If you have been diagnosed with coeliac disease by your gp or hospital you can get gluten free food on prescription. Even if your have to pay for your prescriptions its cheaper than sourcing from the health food shop.

Note spelling - Celiac disease. Also called celiac sprue, gluten-induced enteropathy and non-tropical sprue. It is easier to tell you what foods your friend might be advised to avoid: Wheat, oats and barley. There may be a secondary lactose intolerance making it necessary to eliminate all milk products from the diet.
So what's left? Soy milk and other soy products, rice and corn.

depends how serious it is, I have it mildly and I just avoid wheat, but am ok on spelt, oats, barley and rye. So in my case I can't eat ordinary bread and pasta but am fine on the alternatives, I really hardly notice. If she has it very badly she may not be able to eat things like oats, but the doctor will sort that for her. You do get used to it, though it makes going for a pizza a bit of a hassle

Learn to read labels, anything with WHEAT has to be eliminated from the diet...Good news, theres even bread made gluten free...veges,most other grains would be allowed...Plenty of literature on this diet is available

THey cant eat bread and oats apparently.
Strangley, I saw an article about this in a magazine.
If they eat the about foods, I think it irritates or inflames the lining of the gut.
