Sephora's web site has a "Get the Look" section where they have pictures of models and then instructions for how to apply your makeup to copy the models' appearance:

The Paula's Choice web site is full of great beauty tips for makeup and beyond (like eyebrow tweezing and common makeup myths & problems):

MaryKaye has a good virtual program. You only need go to the homepage to gain access.
I like to just search the web for ideas like at Bobbie Brown's site.
Or just try this.
Find some shadow in two shades that you like. Take the lighter shade and apply to entire lid and eye area. Take the darker shade and apply to the outside corner of the eye lid and into the crease. Darker along the lashes and not so much into the crease if your eye area is smaller. Define eyes with a soft pencil liner practically into the lashes. The lashes give you a good guide so your line isn't jagged. Blend with your fingers to soften. I do the upper and lower lid all the way to the inside corner, but I have big eyes and it closes them up a little. If your eyes are smaller, then just do along the outside corners and blend for a soft look. You can even go back with one of the two shades of liner that you like best and carefully add a little shade along the lower lash for a smokey look.
I like Beauticontrol eye liner because it's soft and easy to blend and correct mistakes. I also like the shadow because it's not overbearing. Most of the shades are soft and subtle. They stay put as well.

Hope that helps.
PS You can get away with shadows from Covergirl and the like. You need not spend big money on shadow if you don't want to. The only thing you need to spend your money on is foundation. A good foundation is priceless.
For combination to oily skin I love the Wet/Dry foundation by beauticontrol. If you apply it dry it's a natural look. IF you apply it wet it gives more coverage. You can also use the same compact for a powder throughout the day if you get a little shiney. It's lightweight, easy to apply, and doesn't come off easily on clothes, phones and the like. It's good stuff.

Try going to the make up counter at a department store. They will give you a demonstration - but take a friend so you can both have it done and you can watch how they apply it on each other!
