You need a pool store clerk to help you with that. I would have a ton of questions to ask you to answer that one. Sometimes it is more cost efficient to drain and start all over again. If that is the case...then you need to change the sand, clean your DE grids, or change your cartridge depending what filter you have.

First, you need to shock the pool and add an algae killer run the filter for a while then vacuum the pool on waste. Refill the pool to the correct water level and if it is still green add more algaecide and chlorine and repeat if you have lots of green or any other colored Floating debris I mean its not just on the bottom and sides you need to add a flock chemical and turn off the filter overnight the flock will grab all the junk and make it sink and then you can vacuum. Once these steps are complete the pool should be clear again and you should Shock it again and then make sure to keep your chlorine levels at the right place..

(I have had a green pool a couple of times it is costly and a pain in the you know where.. now i try VERY hard to keep it clear all season)

I agree with above, you can buy yourself a test kit but best to get a store to start you on your way.

You'll probably need to 'shock' the pool to start with, this is high concentrated Chlorine (called Chlorine Shock) that kills off all those nasty bugs and then regular doses of Cholrine, etc with filtering to keep it clean. You'll also need to get something for Algae too (which is probably why it's green) but a good store will advise you what's best.

It all seems a bit complicated checking PH and adjusting chemicals when you first start but doesn't take long to get into it.

One of my best tips is use Borax, it's a mineral that's brilliant for bringing up the PH and is much much cheaper than the PH+ sold by Pool Stores.
It can be found as a cleaning product in supermarkets or better still, buy a few kilos off the net.

Your best bet is to take a sample of the pool water to a pool supply store near you. They can test it and tell you exactly what you need to clean it up without all the guess work you are going to get here.

Chlorine is one of the main items you need but to see for sure if there is anything else, take a sample to a pool supply place and they can tell you for sure.
