In general, trying to detect a *good* steganoraphic program is a lot harder than it looks - the really good ones manage to hide the data without even bloating the carrier file. Of course, this limits how much it can hide - but being able to hide 1K per every 100K of file isn't at all unreasonable. The usual way to encode it is to hide single bits of the data where it won't be noticed - for instance, in a JPEG, tweak a color pixel very subtly to signal a 1 or zero, then tweak the next pixel to signal another one, etc. When encoding it into an executable, a common technique is to replace instructions with different instructions that do the same thing, and one set of instructions means a 1, and the other a zero.

Careful analysis of the data will often reveal it - int he JPEG case, the encoding produces subtle artifacts in the image, and in the executable case, you get a lot of instruction sequences that are "odd" (not usually generated by compilers). But usually, detection requires that you suspect that the data was embedded using a specific tool, and then use another tool to detect the unique characteristics left by that encoder.

An image file containing too much stuff that is not image will terribly degrade the image destroying its clarity. And also such a file will be terribly bloated. You can use a HEX editor like ULTRAEDIT to look at any file at all to see if things are not right but be warned learning how to properly use this program takes a bit of time and practice. I think it would be better to create a large noise file and embed your scrambled data in that instead of using any kind of orderd multimedia stuff because putting strange stuff in any kind of common stuff will revael itsel one way or another.
Give your noise file an extension that an operating system will never try to open.
The only thing I can think is that people are trying to use these free picture sites to transmit binary files and that will be a violation of AgreementTerms to use such a service in that way.
People be careful I think the PSW??? BANKER2 Trojan is being spead today for that holiday over in England through JPG files somehow.
