Depends upon the trouble. If you have a slow laptop like 100MHZ there is little you can do but if you are running WINDOWS make sure all unnessary background programs are disables by running msconfig and trying a maintenance boot up. Disable everything except Microsoft Services then boot and see if that fixes your trouble. You might also have Adware/malware so run Adaware and Spybot and AVG. If all that fails I dont know what to say except maybe a data transfer problem which is hardware and not software. Then you need to run memtest or other HW diagnostics. Good Luck Comrade. Problem like you describe can hit any computer not just laptops youi got to stop all time shareing programs you dont need running in the background.

More info needed BUT good question.
Unbeknownst to you(it's invisible) gamma rays are slowing down everything... wait that's the physics answer.
Every visit to a web page loads lotsa stuff of which a tiny fraction is ALL you need or want. Isn't that nice- free stuff!
Eventually the poor things full up and exhausted... you can take a nap BUT the PC will need help.
So assuming properly set up PC(or at least bare minumum- AND if you turned off AV to speed up PC don't read further- you have become infected by everything) there are several easy things to do(and defrag is not one of them because most people will have unexpected undesired results).
Assuming windows(good thing there are NOT the one's you can jump out of- though overpopulation would be cured by now)
your PC has become what is technically known as full of excess crap(FEC- as in fecal matter).
But diahrea is not the cure.
The three step easy cure is to delete your cookies(the ones you want and others will return), delete your history, delete your temporary files(odds are there is not a single file that you will miss). If a file is gone a return to that site and save that page as something you call it... BUT 99.9% nothing is missed.
Micro$oft was nice enough to move/hide/change locations in every incarnation of software they made so cannot list complete procedures for ALL. But under tools or elsewhere you will find
these(usually together) with the option of deleting them, DO so!
Reboot PC and visit internet and say dang it's so fast now...
You will have to do this based on your frequency of surfing/sites etc.
There are more in depth ways of harnessing(making Windows work better) but to list them would WAY exceed word limit here.
One free suggestion to speed up any one's boot- your PC's font files... you'll have hundreds BUT only actually use less than a dozen BUT ALL are loaded each boot(But I'll let you find which ones YOU use as an exercise for the student!)
Hope the fast three does it for you... let me know(email and/or points)
If you've added alot of programs you can also effect performance... but the above WILL do no harm where as some of the other advice can lead you to deep doodoo(technical term for M$ registry).

Buy a new laptop.
Kidding. Please update with whattype of laptop, Mac? PC?
Things yo ucan do, defragment your hard drive and delete un-used programs, files, and cache. If this is a PC laptop, also run Disk Cleanup (Right-Click on your C: Drive and pull down to Properties. You will see a Disk Cleanup button.) If this is a Mac, run the Disk Setup Utility and repair all the file permissions. My Mac (OS X) will sometimes lag and this helps a great deal.
Freeing up more space on your hard drive is the best thing you can do, and then defragment more frequently. You can always buy more RAM and that will help increase overall performance. I also suggest using something like Spybot S&D to remove harmful worms and spyware. Link in sources.

If you have an screensaver or programs that are running in the background will slow down the computer.... also, a full memory, or trying to run a large program can slow it down too. Delete stuff you don't need and avoid screen savers... it also maybe time to upgrade your computer... most laptops are good for 2 years or so.

You could also run some scan for spyware/adware or do a virus scan.
Remove unnecessary softwares.
Do defragment your hardisk using the disk defragmentor which can be found in accessories->system tools
or if necessary..just back up all ur stuff and reformat ur lap top :)

you can start by deleting the history and cookies stored on the computer, and then you can do a defrag on it. That puts files in order so it runs more smoothly.
Then if that doesn't help you can check your connections to internet.
hope this helps

you want to re-move programs from your start up menu
Start - Run - "msconfig" - Then Un-Check some PROGRAMS not software from your computer.
Then run some Anti-Spy ware to check for virus and un-wanted programs.
If dont have any anti-spy ware programs go to:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads
then download Windows Defender Beta and other important downloads.
If you have it, good! run it!
then Start - All Programs - Windows Updates... make sure everything is up to date!
The End.

You should control which applications run at system startup. Check the list of programs by running "msconfig" utility.
Go to Start / Run / write "msconfig" / OK. Then go to Startup tab.
