this is causing the unit not to cool inside though the fan is still running outside. Is there a do it yourself fix for this problem.

You need to change the filter inside on the unit, and if you have a build up of dust on the unit inside, you can use a vacuum to clean it or have the coils acid washed.

It has happened to mine a couple of times and usually the vacuum and changing of the filter works.

When the unit freezes up the most likely suspect is low refrigerant. The only thing you can do yourself is to clean around the coils and condenser, but more likely that is not the cause of the problem.

It sounds like it'll require a service technician. The only good news is that this is usually not an expensive fix unless there are other more serious problems. If the unit is still under warranty it may be covered.

Is your fan on the unit running normally? If not than the motor is bad. If you are mechanically inclined to cat remove this and go to your local AC supply house and buy one to replace it. How is the coil surrounding your unit..dirt? This is most common thing. Try spraying it down with a hose if it looks dirty. As for the indoor coil (box ontop of heater with copper lines hooked to it) unsrew the metal panels and check to see if that is dirty, if so get a degreasor and spray it down with a water rinse. Another thing that causes that is a low freon charge. For that you must call a qualified tech. to the house to put his guages on the unit.

you should probably consult a professional but I would offer the advice to check the filter to make sure it is not freezing because the airflow is slowed because of a dirty filter

if it is presently frozen you can either turn it off and wait it out to thaw or try to turn on the heat for a quick fix then switch back to a/c but whenever you go from one to the other you should turn off in between and wait one minute otherwise the system could trip and need to be reset

That is caused by a freon leak. You can recharge the unit for aobut $20 per pound of freon. Sometimes that will work for a few days, sometimes a few years, depending on how bad the leak is.

You more than likely have your thermostat set too low 76 to 74 is optimum. Your compressor is freezing up because it never has a chance to cycle off. Or it could be you have an open window or a bad thermostat.

Low Freon, or unit is too small for the house and never shuts off.
