Yes it is legal, you must have a sequence number, your bank name and address, a routing number and an account number.

In Canada It is legal but if it isn't up
to the Banks standards then they
will refuse to cash it! Check the Bank
for the standards of making a check..
note some banks charge for this service
almost as much as they charge for a
book of cheques note different spelling
you Americans spell check for writing
just like a check mark In Canada it
is different Cheque the Canadian spelling!
Check in the USA banks about making
own checks. Why bother doing that?
The banks are who to ask! you
could ask a lawyer but ouch the cost
would be horrendous for the answer!

you can, though legally, it will probably not be considered a "check", but a secured instrument. All you need is a writing that makes a promise to pay a specific amount of money at a given time with no other promises.
However, noone will be required to accept this, and very few people probably will.

Yes it is legal. But the banks and most stores won't accept it unless the routing and accounting numbers on the bottom contain the special machine readable ink.

As long as your account number and routing numbers are on the document(the numbers on the bottom of the check) and all other pertinent information it can be presented for payment. It can be a napkin and be a "legal" document. You might have trouble getting someone to accept it however.
