When I was there I saw the most horrible abuse of horses. Why isnt there something being done about the treatment of these animals? Like Peta or something? WHAT CAN BE DONE?

I know that horses are meant to be ridden, some of these horses were starving, if you saw them on t.v. being taken from a home here in America you would be appalled.I'm not a tree hugger by the way....

I'm not sure about Aruba, but on Cayman (where I lived for a few years) the locals take very good care of the horses. They are, after-all, an investment. And the more you take care of them, the longer you can use them.

The horses are probably used for tourist excursions which means that, knowing island politics, the only way to reach the locals is to deal directly with the cruise and tourist industry that supplies tourists to that trade. The tourist trade is about 80% of all of these types of areas revenue - so when they say jump, the locals jump. Find out what cruise lines, companies and organizations deal with the place that has the horses in question and pester them about the condition. Chances are that the people taking care (or not taking care of them) will straighten right up in fear of losing business. Also, it would be best not to bother with PETA. They tend to make more of a mess of things then anything else. You can get more accomplished with a small group of people and well written, and persistent, contact with the right people.

PS But be careful, you need to be realistic. Horses are meant to be ridden and used for work. If you suggest that they be treated as a sacred cow, allowed to wander the island and live as equals, you will be laughed at. Make sure your demands are simple: That they are well kept (fed, watered and housed appropriately) and not abused in any way.

PSS What was it that you saw that upset you?

Peta. what would people eating tasty anamals do. There is nothing wrong with riding a horse. That is what they are for. You know Beasts of burden. Go hug some trees or something.

you should email PETA.
but let me explain that PETA is not as innocent as you think it is.
they have vans that go around and pick up unwanted animals from peoples homes who would otherwise give them to the SPCA.
but they say that they take care of them and give them new homes but they were busted with secret drugs in the vans that euthanize the animals as soon as they are in the vans and they dump them.
so, you should tell them about it but realize that they arent the "end all, be all" of saving animals.

PETA sucks. I can't believe you are more worried about animals than people.
