As said before it's best to get a cage without a wire bottom as it's not good for the bunnies feet. I suggest having a playpen instead of a cage. It gives them more room, is sometimes cheaper, and you can just open up the side to let them run when you're home. *note you may need to buy a top cover if your bunny's a high jumper. The cheapest I've found is at

Just make sure to get the large one.

Another good option which I'm doing is building my own cage. It's amazingly easy. You can buy 2 packages of Neat Idea cubes from almost any Walmart/Target/Kmart/etc. and they are only around $13 each. (maybe even less depending on where you live). There are cool websites like

http://www.rabbitnetwork.org/articles/NIC.shtml

that have directions on how to build one of your own. Just remember to buy the nylon cable ties (available at any hardware store/Home Depot).

Good luck!!!

PS. The size of the cage depends on the size of the rabbit. rabbit.org (the website of all rabbit websites suggests the following)

Bigger is better! A cage should be at least 4 times the size of your bunny

That depends on the breed. Breeds with an average adult size over 10-11 pounds should be kept in cages with a solid floor. Rabbits that weigh less than that are easier to maintain in wire floor cages. The cage size varies greatly on the breed. Breeds such as Checkered Giants, Flemish Giants, and French Lops really need cages that are about 4' wide by 3' deep. I don't recommend ever making a cage over 3' deep, because it makes it too hard to get the rabbit out.

Some breeds such as Netherland Dwarfs only need a cage about the size of a carrying cage. However, most wire cages for rabbits are built around three standard sizes:

24" wide x 24" deep x 18" tall - 4 pens per 8 feet
32" wide x 24" deep x 18" tall - 3 pens per 8 feet
32" wide x 30" deep x 18" tall - 3 pens per 8 feet

Wire cages are much cheaper to build than wood hutches.

PetSmart, Petco, Animal Shelter or go to Yahoo and try the House Rabbit Society for your state. Some of the volunteers (foster families) may have extra cages when people give up their rabbits to them....they probably give them the cages to in some cases. Good luck!

You can make your own. The web site is below. I did this for some of my larger rabbits that need to be on solid bottoms.

You can make them larger then most you can buy commercially and cheaper.

You want as large a cage as you can get for them and tall enough for them to stand up in.

I think this is a good size for a rabbit.
http://www.rabbitcentral.com/sp-60230.html For one rabbit it should be big enough to fix at least two rabbits laying down. Please make sure that the cage doesn't have a wire floor. Rabbits don't have pads on their feet like cats or dogs and they could hurt themselves.

You can try Petsmart, Petco, etc.

Feed stores also have rabbit hutches for sale.

You are going to want something he can easily jump around in and something that has something to catch its feces.

Note: Rabbits produce a lot of feces.

Also make sure there is plenty of space for it's water bottle. It will need to be at least a foot tall to accomodate the bottle.

Check with your local county 4-H office ( county extension office ). They could help with the rabbit questions and maybe know someone in their group that builds cages. We used to build our own.
