Because there are never two identical performances. You can see the same show 200 times and see something each night. The interaction between crowd and performer is the same as it was when Thespis stepped out of the chorus. It takes a true performer to act onstage. Almost anyone can be made to look and sound good on tv, movies, or the radio because of a little thing called mixing and editing, but on stage, what you see/hear is what you get. There's a certain energy in being on stage or even watching it from the audience that you just cannot get from sitting in a movie theatre or on your couch.
Theatre is almost like a time machine. You can get completely lost in the world onstage whether it's 1922 or 1800, especially if the performance takes place more than just in front of the audience.
Now if only it didn't cost an arm and a leg to see a show on Broadway...

To myself, its an art form. Its a way to take everyones burdens and help people understand them. Theatre is a gate way for people, and the artists who do it are the gate keepers. We open the door to helping the people of the world see reality. The fact its real, like if you wanted to, you could touch the people (not like film) is amazing.
Try sitting alone and reading oedipus, or and of Neil LaBute, or Tennessee williams. You'll feel what we feel when we perform. Its amazing.
Read August Strindburgs "Easter". Plays can change you life.
I do theatre because its what I was born to do. I am an artist because I am able to feel everyones joy, everyones pain.
Does that make sense?
I hope so.

Theatre is the best way to get people thinking about how other people act - and how they ought to.
TV or film ought to be good for this - but they are in the pockets of big money and they only tell us what Fox wants us to hear.
Local theatre is better than Broadway - it doesn't have to kiss so much a**,

Its still a way of entertaining people.
I do like going to the theatre because its a good night out. Its like asking why do people go to the cinema when they have sky movies and DVD players.
I think it is really nice to watch a live play as its completely different to watching it on TV.

Theater is a unique form of entertainment in that it can directly engage the audience. The actors are live in front of you. There can be a connection there that is always going to be lacking in film. That said, I love movies, and am a huge movie nerd, but I also love the theater. It's beauty is the immediacy of it. The script can change to reflect events that occurred the very same day.
I could probably go on forever on the subject...

It keeps plays that were written years ago, alive and some of them are popular, because they are seen through fresh eyes. If you are into acting, then it is a way of expressing yourselves and showing a hidden talent you might not have ralised exisited before. It is also a great way of getting some confidence into yourself, if you are a bit shy.

because everyone likes to be intertainded(sp?). Don't you? And it's different from movies(kindof). in theaters, you can see the actors right in front of you, and unlike movies, they can't freze up.
