wash your face with water as hot as u can comfortably use ( don't burn yourself!!) this opens pores and makes them easy to clean once u are finished rinsing splash you face with ice water this will close pores and your face will be less oily and less likely to get zits.

You're method is almost correct.
Use some warm water to wet you're face, this opens the pores and helps to remove dirt.
Use any fragrance and color free mild/gentle face soap (preferably glycerin baby soap).
Wash (using a flannel) and then rinse with cold water, to close the pores, prevent dirt from getting in, and help prevent the skin from drying out to much.
Hope this helps.

You are doing a good job! Warm water opens your pores so they get cleaner and the cold water closes them blocking dirt etc. Have you tried Basis Soap? It is EXTREMELY mild and might work for your skin.
