What do you think about stores keeping baby formula locked up at the register? I've been told it's because formula is a high theft item, and I've been told it's because drug dealers use it to cut cocaine. Either way I think it's pretty sad that we live in a world where baby formula has to be kept under lock and key.

It's interesting that not Walmart stores keep the formula locked up. Walmart is where I first learned about it. I went up and down the formula aisle several times thinking I'd lost my mind, then I asked an employee who told me it was at the register now. My local Kmart keeps it locked up too.

This is the first I have heard of drug dealers using it to cut cocaine. However, any item that is a necessity for a child and seems expensive to some will be a high theft item. Stores have to protect themselves. It does make it harder for the people who just want to purchase the item. The problem is not with getting the stores to change it is in getting society to change.

I've only expereinced this at one particular grocery store in my neighborhood. They kept all of the baby formula locked behind the register and it drove me nuts. The one thing that bothered me was that when I really needed formula, not only did they have the kind I needed but there was never anyone standing at the register! Would if I came there in the middle of the night desperately needing formula to feed my baby (in which this one time was the case). They had very poor formula selections. They always carried the ones that no one ever purchased. On top of that, the store always seemed to be unclean. I was completely turned off so I approached another worker there and asked questions. That's when she told me they kept the formulas behind the counter because it was a high theft item. So in that aspect, I understood why they were behind the counter. Instead of becoming annoyed, I just chose to shop at another nearby store who didn't keep their formulas secured "under lock and key".

never seen baby formula under lock and key. . .how awful. But I would agree that it is a high-theft item--almost anyone with an infant needs it regardless of income. And if you're looking at the difference between your kid going hungry or taking it, I guess I can see why people might make that choice.
I can't imagine that drug dealers would cut cocaine with it. . .most forumla has milk-protein in it and can spoil rather quickly if left outside the container or is exposed to high temperatures, etc. as well as having a tendency to clump up with any humidity/moisture at all.

I've been told it's because it's a high theft item. What's strange though is that in my area, it's not the super expensive stuff that's kept locked up, but the more common ones...Similac, Enfamil, etc. Why wouldn't they keep them all locked up? (If someone's desperate enough to steal formula, it seems that they would take whatever kind is available, doesn't it?)

Because it's expensive, and therefore, people steal it.
When I used to (note past tense) do drugs, none of it was cut with formula, but ya never know how things may change in a couple of decades.
Also, I think it's very possible that it ends up being stolen by drug addicts, as much as dealers, 'cause they want to spend their money on something besides the health of their children. Great world we live in, 'aint it?

I've never seen it under lock and key. I don't have any problems buying formula for my 4 month old granddaughter. Maybe the drug dealers here in Phoenix haven't discovered that trick yet.

I saw at Food Lion that the formula was behind a locked glass shelf.
Never at Walmart and we shop on a military installation so they have it out in the open but no one is dump enough to steal on a military installation anyway.
It is sad that they have to do that.

At least this way no one has a chance to tamper with it. If it is a high theft item it also protects the consumer, less stealing = lower prices.

Never heard of this before (I don't have babies) but I checked and it's a story on MSNBC. Very strange! And yes, a sad statement on society.
Maybe it's a conspiracy by the "all women must breast feed their children" fanatics?
