A laptop was an earlier version. They were the portable version of their day. The market demanded something slightly smaller and lighter for portability. The notebook was born. It was called a notebook to give the impression it was the same size as a notepad (A4). However the wheel has turned another cycle and for presentations notebooks started to get bigger until some have 17" screens now and are bigger and heavier than the earlier laptop. Small portable computers should be called notebooks and the larger models should be called laptops. However the general public refer to them as the same thing calling them either notebooks or laptops.
Usefulness depends on how much of the time you are on the move. If you intend to carry your computer a lot then weight is a consideration. The cost depends on what specification you want. If you can do without playing memory hungry games it will reduce the cost. Stick to good brand names I suggest Toshiba or Sony. If you intend to use the computer a lot don't go for a white keyboard as they get grubby after a while.

Um theyre the same thing...i just call mine a laptop just cuz notebook sounds like things you carry before college... but as for the usefulness and all that it depends on what you like..if your into all that gaming stuff then i recomend alienwares and if you want a more normal one i really like the sony vaios..they have all sizes..i have the tr series...their really tiny but they dont make that anymore..they now have the t series to take their place and their really small and light so theyre portable and pricey

both are the same, but apparently laptops are no longer to be called that, because it is dangerous to have a 3kg (approx ) laptop on your lap,so they are to be called notebooks
there are larger notebooks which are called desktop replacements, and the mobile notebooks are now known as portables
