This is a follow-up question to my original question. Original question (that was answered) was...I think I'm being ripped off by my car dealer. I had the engine replaced about 2 years ago due to stupidity on a family members part. The whole engine needed to be repalced on a 99 Mustang due to not putting oil in it for over a year. So it gets replaced. For the past year we have been noticing black spots on the cardboard underneath the car in the mornings. When we took it to the dealer he said it was an engine leak and they would fix it because the engine still had a year left on its warranty. THen they say it was also a tranny leak and we had to pay for that. Now everytime it leaks we take it to the dealer and always its the tranny. What color is tranny fluid and what color is engine fluid? So that was answered, NOW I take it to the dealer, and he agrees there is a leak, but he says its coming from the Main engine seal. Does engine oil or tranny oil come from there?

engine oil is gold in coler when new and almost black when used, tranny fruid is red in color. It turns brownish when it is old. If you had a dealership do the engine overhaul it is thier responsibility to replace the seal in the transmission for the torque converter if it is a automatic trans. Engine oil will come out of the rear main seal if it is bad or not sealed properly at assembly.

Rear Main Seal

Hi over there..

take out the dipstick of the engine and the one found in the tranny; compare the color of the oil you see in the grund to see where it comes from. The transmision (automatic) oil is red and the engine's oil can be brown, black, red, depending on the brand. Manual transmission fluid has higher viscosity that the others and most of the time is brown.

Now, the engine's rear seal is used to prevent ENGINE OIL to go out of the engine from the back. The back of the engine is in touch with the transmission, doesnt matter if is manual or automatic. If it goes out it may touch the torque converter or the flywheel depending on the find of transmisison your car has.

why don't you get a 2nd opinnion from a friend or maybe another shop?

in my opinion the step one is to clear where the oil comes from... if it is engine's oil the it may be a good chance that the warranty will cover the repair; if it is engine from else where then i don't think so.

Good luck

All correct. The main seal is at the back of the engine (unless it sits sideways LOL!). The other mechanic may be confused as this seal sits right next to where the tranny bolts up. Sometimes the oil will leak into the torque converter cover and make it look like it is coming from the tranny (yes if he is a Mechanic he should know this).

Get your warrant papers out and have them fix it.

Good luck!

The rear main seal is at the back of the engine around the crankshaft. If it is leaking, it is leaking engine oil.

Main Seal

the rear main seal is between the engine and the transmision if you are seeing oil it could be that therear emgine seal is leaking and not the rear main seal, there is a seal in the rear of the engine
this seal does need changing on a cosion when the engine is neglected.

It is the seal at the rear of the crankshaft,. Oil is the fluid coming out of it

Engine oil is brown to black color depending on miles on oil and transmission fluid is red to dark red depending on fluid age. The shop should use an oil leak dye and uv light to pinpoint the leak....It could be both...The rear main seal seals block to crankshaft...The trans front pump seal or gasket seals trans pump to trans case...

engine oil and it should be black - tranny fluid will be red - rear main seal surrounds the back end of the crankshaft.
