In the midst of low approval ratings regarding Iraq and the war, military dissent (that is, service men and women refusing to deploy or redploy) and record low volunteers, it seems that we might either have to withdraw or draft.

You are too blind to see the facts. Volunteering is at an all time low, just check your Fox News. You obviously didn't or can't read the article. MANDITORY MARINE REDPLOYMENTS.
Nut sack.

One more bit of info, this is the house and senate bill for the proposed draft that Andrew K doesn't think exists. Drafted in 03 by democrats.
S 89 and HR163

I am totally against the draft. Every time this is put into effect the only ones who have to go are the poor and middle class who cannot go to college to avoid the draft or have parents who are rich enough to pay you out. Let George and his family go fight, it's not our war. My dad was burned in World War II and my brother went to the draft for Vietnam with a brace on his back. Let the rich send their own kids to fight and let's see how long the war lasts. The US should mind their own business and help their own people.

I have asked and answered this question time and time again. The answer has always been YES. The draft, the military, is a very important part of or country and or society, for many many reasons. As it has always been said, it builds character. It helps build relationships, commerodery and an understanding for commerodery.
The daft will also train all types of people. Allowing young men , men, to defend our country against foreigners as well as the over throw of our government from outside or from with in. This is probably the most important aspect of the draft. For the government to enlist foreigners for the military, as they have been doing is dangerous for AMERICAN CITIZENS. It creates a military of foreigners that are beholding to the people in power rather that the citizens of the United States. This is happening right now.
Even a military of Americans who join because they can't get decent jobs is dangerous for the citizens of America. And I believe that both of these are what is happening right.
If you could chart the recent history I believe you would see that ever since the government has had an all volunteer military the government has been doing a power garb, starting with Ronald Regan all the way up to the present day. And they r boldly grabbing more and more power at present .
It is my belief that there is a present over throw of our government right now. We now have corporations taking over control of our country. We need an amendment that seprates "corporations" from state, just as we have a seperation of church and state.
I will add one more point. Since a person is supose to go to war for just one year, I don't see why the enlistment age is still in play. If a person is in good health they should allow them to enlist in the resevers or guard so that they can help. At present they allow professionals to enlist at basicily any age. It has been said that old men make wars for young men to go to and die. I say now elimenate the age limit and base elistment on health.
I believe that mature adults, 40 and over, have lived a life and therefore are in a better postion to offer there lives in war.

The army should stay a volunteer one. To reinstate the draft for a war that has no public support and was based on a lie would be a political suicide for the republicans. But hey be my guest on that one. I think enough people died on both sides to say end it already. The US presence in Iraq at this point is not the solution, but a big part of the problem.

Absolutely not. It dishonors the service of those who choose to enlist by giving the current administration an endless supply of bodies. It makes it too easy to replace the men and women who are putting their lives on the line. Our leaders need to decide now, just how many lives of Americans and Iraqis they are willing to lay down before they get to the real business of tracking down Bin Lauden.
The fact that enlistment is down proves that the American people are not behind this war. Although I support and pray for our troops, I resent that my non-support of this war has been labled unpatriotic by some in Washington.
I would ask Bush why he did not serve with honor when called, and why he would expect others to do so for him and his war.
I should add that I come from a family with a tradition of volunteering to serve even during the draft years.

If you had ever served in the military you would know that, your term of service is subject to re-call, for a certain amount of time, even after discharge. Every enlisted person knows this, we all hope that it doesn't happen, but it should come as no surprise.
This is still not a draft, and if you ever served you would know that as well. Myself, if I were ten years younger I would enlist again, but oh well. I wish our boys and girls home but that is not going to happen anytime soon. OK in short our freedom has not been free, and we do what we have to, in order to get the job done. The talk of the draft is hopefully just fear mongering, and I can see your fear.

Technically, we are not still at war, we are occupying Iraq right now.... So, I don't see a draft as being necessary.
Either way, war or not, I don't believe any legislation regarding a draft would ever pass..... Like others have said before me, I don't want anyone fighting for our country that doesn't want to be there.

We should reinstate the draft. It would get some of these hoodlums off the street.Since they like gang-bangin',they could go to Iraq and do it legally. It would also give some of these kooky young liberals a chance to fight for freedom, instead of sniveling about not having any.
