Much piracy actually took the form of privateers licensed by the monarch (who took a share of the spoils!) to attack the shipping of countries with which the country was at war. This form of war became obsolete in the eighteenth century when Britain developed a strong Royal Navy to fight its sea wars.

Piracy is prevented around the United Kingdom these days by the presence of the Roayl Navy and coastguard together with police, in Britain and Europe, who would arrest the priates if they landed.

Sadly, piracy is still a considerable problem worldwide today, particuarly off the coasts of Africa and in the Far East. British ships are not immune from such piratical attacks. Piracy is in no way glamorous as it endangers the safety of seafarers, not just their cargo.

It's not eradicated!

Being a pirate would just make you a criminal and possibly also a terrorist, so pirates are now terrorists!

If however this isn't the case, then maybe it wasn't eliminated and just died out of it's own accord?

:-)
