Oh, how easy this is -- depends on what condition the steps are in (and whether they were painted or stained in the first place or are indoors or outdoors).

If not in too bad of shape -- go to the Local Hardware (or Lowes or Home Depot or similar store) and go to the paint counter and ask! They will help you.

First of all, you most likely will need to sand the surface -- so a hand sander will be needed and sandpaper. It requires muscle work, but it is worth it to have a better finish.

I cleaned my exterior steps (wood Deck) with a patio cleaner -- and then sanded/stained after checking the condition of the boards when they dried. I did replace some of the boards, but most were still in pretty good condition and just needed restaing.

Are they indoor steps? You could cover them with vinyl tiles. You can get stair edgers at Home Depot to finish of the edge of each step. Its quite easy and not very expensive. If they are outdoor steps, are they in good shape? You could prime them and seal them with decking stain...again, cheap and cheerful! The good folks at the Home Depot are always friendly and helpful if you need help/suggestions. Trust me I know, I've spent the better part of the summer (not to mention my pay cheque) in there!! Good luck!

not a problem. Get some books. You can either refinish them (much harder) or put down a runner (long carpet that goes down the stairs) just make sure that it is secured well, at the back of the step. good luck

It is hard to say without seeing the stairs....There are many things that you could do....What I would do, is go to your local hardware store and ask someone to help you....Just tell them the look you are going for and the amount that you would like to spend. They can give you several options, and some instructions on how to properly handle you specific situation.
