My 5 year old granson passed away on July 15th and I would love to make my daughter a quilt out of Coby's clothes for her, but I don't know where to begin and I don't want to ruin it. I have some sewing and quilting experience.

Here's some help, as best as Internet help comes. You begin by taking a look at all the clothes you will have to work with and you may need to purchase some material for borders and a backing. You decide what pattern you would like and one that will work with your fabric colors and designs. Look at books available in fabric stores or wherever in your area there may be some. Sometimes even the local library has books about quilting with designs. Machine quilts are the fastest and to me the easiest. Pick a quilt design that allows you to do this, there are even books on this, I have some. Employees who know something about sewing and quilting could help you out if there is a store in your area, to get you going. There is a store in my town that even has a quilting machine that you can take your top and bottom fabric in, they will use a machine with the pattern you choose, add the batting and quilt the top. After they do that, you put the binding on. I have made quilts all on my own machine at home, even top-stitching. Sounds like a real fun project that might help heal some pain. My condolences.
Send me a note if you want more help or have any questions.

I have an idea, but like you, I would be concerned about doing it correctly.

Do you have any quilt shops in your area? If so, I would ask the women who work there how to go about it. They would know the right way and maybe refer you to some books in the store.

If you don't have a quilt shop, try JoAnn's or Hancock Fabrics.

You may also want to look online. Try "Googling" memory quilts or words like that.

Making a memory quilt will be a very nice and generous gift.

I am sorry for your loss.

That is the most precious thing I have read on this site. I knew a lady one time who could sew anything you wanted, including home-made quilts. I wished I could help you out but all I can do is offer some hints maybe to get you some help. Have you ever gone to the site (www.justask.com.) or went on e-bay. You could post this on there and ask anyone if they could help you get started making a quilt adding the information you just gave us. Offer to pay a little bit to get you started. I know there is someone out there that could hel you. God Bless and good luck finding someone.

So very sorry about your grandson, we lost our 25 year old son on July 22. I think that is a great idea to make a quilt from his clothes, and also get some pics of him wearing some of the clothes and transfer them onto fabric and put them on also. The crazy quilt would be nice and put some cute things in your transfer that would bring a smile to her face and lift her heavy heart. Maybe funny things that he said , gather it from different family members and put there names to it . That would be something to hold and cherish for a lifetime and how special a mom and grandmother you are. You both will be in our prayers, God bless you.
