I think mental break down is a passe phase from long ago. There are several mental illnesses that you might be referring to. Obsessive Compulsion Disorder. Most people feel you are just born with this disorder. Major Depression, which can have psychosis (Seeing things Hearing things that are not there). It can also just be depression only lasting a longer period and being more intense than normal depression. This can be caused by the brain malfunctioning (chemicals hormones what ever) or as a natural reaction to something like a death in the family. Some times we just get stuck there. Then there is bipolar disorder. Most people feel this is in the genes. Schizophrenia which most people feel is in the genes and then schizoefective disorder again something in the genes. There is allot of debate about the last four and depression cause by malfunction of the brain that there is a genetic component but also that something has to trigger the disease like a stress event.

Stress is the number one thing, I think. The more stresses in your life, the more likely you are to have issues. Good luck!
