I am a pharmacist and all my job is about "good and bad chemicals".Good ones are:/this is put just as a topic for you/:
-food
-medicines which are prescribed by doctors
-cosmetic substances
-raw materials for industry
-oil
-chemical colors
and bad ones are:
-toxines
-air-polution gasses
-medicines when not used in proper doses
-radioactive materials.

Considering 'chemical' means any kind of atomic or molecular substance, I'd say they help us because without them there would be no atomic matter and we (along with the Earth, the Sun and a good fraction of the rest of the galaxy) wouldn't exist.
EDIT: Oh, and if your science teacher wants to argue that with me, let them go ahead. >:D

we all have chemicals coursing through our bodies and without them we would die. Our brains are extremely dependent on the juices in and around them, the tiniest imbalance can cause hallucinations, psychologial problems and some scary emotional backlash.
