Sex is a very complicated thing. It is meant to be enjoyed and to bring pleasure within a loving and stable relationship (i.e., marriage).
When we venture outside of that, sex can be the very thing that causes us pain and sadness. If you're sneaking around having sex with someone (or mutliple someones) that you know you shouldn't be involved with, it can cause great angst.
Honestly, I think sex might be the number one cause of mental breakdowns -- although, I don't have data on that.

To be the devils advocate from all the yeses. I find sex very healing. I have bipolar disorder co morbid with panic attacks. Often my wife will suggest that we have sex while I am having troubles. This often calms me right down. Don't know how but it seems to work.

I believe so. A woman gets raped and she will definitely have a mental breakdown.
