I had this problem with both my son and daughter, when you get to the beach dig a hole and encourage him to sit over it (with his pants on). When he says he needs a wee tell him that
nobody will see him if you take of his shorts (they will just think hes sitting there), remember to take a nappy sack in case he has a poo as well. Otherwise take him to the sea, he will probably do a pee in there.

Take James' potty with you and keep under pushchair (if poss). When on beach, I used to take my son to somewhere away from others and let him see into the sea or a small hole in the sand, then cover it up. If he needs to poo, take some nappy bags with you, use it like you would for a doggy bag and then put some sand in with it. Dispose into a doggy bin if poss. Hope this helps and have a good time.

It's how YOU approach potty training that brings fast results. I potty trained my child in less than a week with this method http://pottytraining.toptips.org

take his potty, and when he's filled it, top it up with sand... then tip into a plastic bag to drop into a bin after you've tied it up.
same for number twos, if that happens! (it stops the smell right away) but you could tip that one into a dog bin.

just re read the question, my answer was entirely useless! sorry!

he will have to use the pot or wear little swimmers, if he's trained its highly unlikely he will feel natural doing it in the water

empty coke bottles??

Take his potty and when he has to go offer to block him in with towels and stuff. this way he can still have his privacy. Try this at home and make it fun!

Only other option really is a swim diaper to catch "accidents" or let him go with nothing and risk messy accidents.

We have a great little pop up tent that fits in a bag. Maybe if you put the potty in a little tent like that, you could tell him its his special bathroom?

you can get those sun canopy things for the beach that are very similar to tents. you could try putting his potty in there and then he won't really feel like he's outside. you can get them from argos, boots, mothercare and that not that expensive.
i would suggest it anyway if you are going somewhere hot as children need protecting from the sun so they don't burn or get sun stroke
