What would these laws do exactly and what do you think of them?

It's nothing about marriage, it has something to do with teaching about gays in school and not being about to say bad stuff about them... something like that.

California has laws on the books for Domestic Partnerships, which grant all the same rights as being married, except they only apply within California and they do not allow joint filing of taxes. This option is available to same-sex couples, as well as opposite-sex couples over the age of 65.

California also has laws on the books that prohibit same-sex marriage. Those laws were challenged in court, and a state judge ruled in 2005 that the ban violates the California state constitution. That decision is currently under appeal.

I think the government should not be using gender-based discrimination to determine who can get legal benefits.

{EDIT} Oh... OK.

You mean SB 1437, the Bias Free Curriculum Act.

Basically, it prohibits teaching prejudice in schools. In other words, any school curriculum has to be neutral on the subject of homosexuality, and cannot condemn it as "immoral" because that is a religious (not scientific) determination.

I think that any attempt to remove prejudice from the classrooms is good, and it's really pathetic that some people want our schools to teach children how to hate others for being different.

It would just say that everybody in California has to be treated with respect whatever their sexual orientation just like it is now for most unique groups of people. It does NOT promote teaching homosexuality in the schools. It does recognize that gays are in the schools. They are also in your community, neighborhoods, churches, health clubs. shopping malls, work sites and here is the best of all--they are in your homes and in your families. Accept it and deal with your own confusion. Welcome to the Real World---men, women, old, young, children, adults, black, white able, disabled and straight and gay.
