I down loaded msn messenger and the mac book did not recognize the file

Sounds like you are a new MAC user. You have to look for downloads that specify MAC compatibility. Usually there will be a link for MAC's, but there are some apps that MACS don't work with. There is already an answer that leads you to the right place to get the mac version, so I won't bother with that.

Always look for the mac version. the file xet, will be different, for example .dmg as opposed to.exe

you're in all probability doing some thing incorrect. Do you have the contacts window open? (window->contacts). Do you have the checklist opened? (there's slightly arrow that opens/closes the checklist)
