Then we would still have high gas prices, except the money would go to the government instead of to the oil companies. Now, if you are talking about government regulation of the oil industry, that is a different matter and it has possibilites.

What makes you think that government intrusion into the private sector will not cause either higher gas prices or gas shortages? The last time the government decided to play God in the gas marketplace and cap prices, there were widespread gas shortages.
The examples of disastrous government intrusion are:
Post Vietnam price and wage freezes, Post WW2 price and wage freezes, FDR implementation of bad economic ideas that actually caused the Depression to last years beyond when it would have naturally recovered.
Two more thoughts:
The constitution actually limits government from doing this.
Government cannot overrule the law of supply and demand any more than it can repeal the law of gravity.

when the government starts to compete with business, they have an unfair advantage. They do not have to follow the same guidelines as the private sector, so that gives them more than just a financial advantage.
Do you think the govt has proven itself to run business'? Look at the public schools vs. private schools. Look at health care in canada. Sure its "free". But when canadians need to have someting done without waiting 6 months, and want a qualified physician to do it, they come to the US.
If you are worried about gas prices, I suggest you vote for someone who is willing to reduce the strict guidelines for processing oil. We have not built a refinery in over 30 years due to them, and we lost one of them in katrina.
The private sector is more capable of creating lower prices, and a far better product than the government is.

The government collects more revinue in taxes per gallon of gas then the oil company does in profit...
besides price controls dont work.
If you dont let people make money they will stop makeing a product then we will have no gas. It is called the law of supply and demand

Don't forget that it is the government that taxes you . They come up with some pretty ridiculous stuff too. They tax you for EVERY thing that you buy with YOUR money. They tax you for what money YOU earn. They tax you for the HOME you live in. I bet if the government ran the show they would do away with ALL competition . You would probably wind up paying MORE yet.Their current solution is to use other forms of energy , which is fine , but are they going to buy me a new car?
