given

x = the loser

x + 220 the winner

810 = total votes

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The formula

x + x + 220 = 810

-220 -220

Subtract - 220 from both sides

2x = 590

2x/2 = 590/2

Dividing both sides by 2

x = 295

Insert the x value ( 295) into the formula

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

x + x + 220 = 810

295 + 295 + 220 = 810

295 + 515 = 810

810 = 810

Identify what you are trying to find and give it a variable - in this case, the number of votes. Choose say, n, to represent the number of votes a candidate receives. The winning candidate had 220 more than the loser. The total number of votes is 810.

n = the number of votes by the loser
n + 220 = the number of votes of the winner
810 = the total number of votes

n + n + 220 = 810
2n + 220 = 810
2n + 220 - 220 = 810 - 220
2n = 590
2n/2 = 590/2

n = 295
n + 220 = 515

The loser had 295 votes
The winner had 515 votes

Say winner polled "a" votes and loser polled "b" votes.

then,
a + b = 810 (1)
But a = b + 220 (2)

substituting (2) in (1) for a,

b + 220 +b = 810
2b = 810-220
= 590
so b = 295
and a = 515

let the winnin candidate be x.
and the losin candidate be y.
x+y=810
x is 220 more than y, so we can say that:
y+y=810 - 220 = 590
therefore, 2y is 590 so y = 590/2
that is 295.
x = 295 + 220 = 515

Ans: x=515, y=295

loser had x votes
winner had x + 220

total votes = x + x + 220 = 810

2x = 810 - 220
x = 295

loser had 295
winner had 515
