OK I went on an interview on my b-day August 10th for a job I really want. The following Monday (8/14) I had a second interview with the same company for the same job. I had an employment test right after that interview. One day later the Human Resources Manager told me they were down to a couple of candidates and needed references. The next day the human resources manager went on vacation and won't be back until August 28th. She left an emergency call number for another person in human resources on her voicemail. Do you think I should call that emergency number and ask what is going on with the job? I haven't heard anything and I am going crazy over here. I am worried that I lost the job. I don't want to hurt my chances by being too pushy, but I don't want to lose the job either. What would you do? Thanks for your opinions and advice.

What would you accomplish by calling? Really. It won't help you get the job and could hurt your chances if you make an urgent call and come off as annoying, desperate, or unprofessional since you used an emergency number for no good reason (to anyone but you, of course).
She will be back on the 28th and I'm sure you'll hear soon after. Did they even call your references yet? If not, then that's what's coming up next when she gets back. If so, then they probably have a meeting when back to discuss and decide.
I would give them a week or so after coming back from vacation before you check in. Let her get back in the swing of things from vacation before you bother her- again, there's no value to the call but personal satisfaction, so just be considerate of them.

No, it would not be appropriate. Afterall, she told you it was an Emergency number. Wait until August 28th or 29th and call one time or until you can contact the HRM. If you call more than that, they will think you are desperate and will wonder why you are despearte.
If she tells you she still isn't sure, don't call again. At that point just hope for the best, but expect the worse and continue your job search. Good luck!

If she left an emergency # don't call unless it's an emergency.If it's convenient stop by and ask if they've made a decision yet or when they expect to. Be persistent not pushy, and make sure to contact them on the 28th if that's when the hr manager returns.

Being a little pushy is OK so long as you don’t overdo things. Try to phrase it as if you want to help them in the decision making process; such as by asking them if they need any more info or if you can do anything to make the selection go easier.

Definatly wait. DO NOT CALL. HR is on vacation if you call the emergency number for sure you would loose the job.

Call them and be professional about it. Tell them that you weren't informed about the notification methods and timescales in the recruitment process. Is it possible that they could tell you.
