Donate blood or plasma. Work for a temp agency - the ones who pay you the same day. Take out a "pay-day" loan. Mow yards, clean out garages, babysit - all those things that pay you as soon as you finish the task.
Go online and get your books cheaper at Amazon.com or other company.
Realize - that you may just have to wait to get your books. Good luck!

Speak to each and every one of your professors. Tell them about your situation. They may be able to photocopy the first few readings for you. They may even have extra copies of the books that they could lend to you for a week or two. Alternatively, they may already have put the readings on reserve in the library, or in electronic form on Blackboard (if your university uses that system).
Remember, your professors (most of them, anyway) WANT to help you to succeed. They have had students in tough financial spots before, so they will have dealt with these kinds of situations many times. They even may have been in a similar situation themselves when they were undergrads! (I was!)
Best wishes to you!

At most colleges you dont really need your books for the first few days of classes. Perhaps if you have understanding friends you can study together or borrow their books until your check gets there?

Wait to buy the books until the second week of classes. There is almost always a copy in the library that you can use until then.

Use a credit card and then pay it off as soon as you get the money.
