In todays society "straight" is the "norm".
(I couldn't care one way or the other.)
Stereotyping people under categories of gay, lesbian, straight, disabled, whatever.
Some people for whatever reason have an issue with people being gay. I mean its a sexual preference, what business is it of anyones. who someone prefers to be with??
I understand your question is about why the word is used so often but you really have to look at society to figure this answer out. Its like why do we put a name on anyone?
That white girl or that black guy or the crippled we are after all just people and for those of you who must put a label to each & every person I feel sorry for you.

I am not sure the question that you are really intending. I do think that we should try to be humble and in awe of the diversity of life on the planet which includes people with their diverse characters, cultures, lifestyles, and sexual orientations. By doing so we are able to appreciate the struggles and imagine the situation of others without making any judgement calls. As a consequence we become more tolerant and go beyond our own gender and sexual orientation to become a kind human being. "Gay" is definitely a euphemism, a nice way of saying something. "Straight" is not euphemistic but chauvanistic as it is implying that those who are not hetrosexual are deviants. It is important for us to use words that show kindness and tolerance of other people

I think it is because there is nothing new about straight people. But for gay people it is kinda new. As it is OK to be straight but not to be gay. People thank that gay in nasty. So people use that word to tell you are not good.

Isn't this intriguing.

The word "gay" was commandeered by homosexuals themselves, as a short, pleasant-sounding word that was supposed to make homosexuality sound mainstream. (They stole it from the Flintstones, who no longer will be allowed to enjoy "a gay old time.")

Then a funny thing happened. By their grotesque behavior (for example, their Gay Pride parades, their AIDS, Rosie O'Donnell, and so on) "gays" turned a glad-sounding word into a term of opprobrium. So it is used in the vernacular today.

because society views being gay as abnormal, where as straight is normal. So gay is used to point out that they are not part of the normal, standard group.
Just like people who witness something say "I saw a BLACK guy running" they never say I saw a white guy running, Our society just views normas, and not saying a color or sexual descriptor, means it was a normal person. I disagree with this belief, but that is why

It's all about percentages. Since a larger percentage of people are straight, we don't feel the need to identify them as such. (Same with right-handed people.) "Gay" indicates a difference from the majority, and so is used to point out a difference.

Probably because there aren't as many Gay's as there are straight's, Because they are different to the majority of people they are more talked about. People always talk more about what is different to them, than what is the same.

I think 'gay' is used so often because people use it to mean 'bad' or 'unfortunate'. For example: "this exam was so gay."

It's unfortunate too, I feel bad for gay people that a term used to describe them is synonymous with negativity.

I think "gay" is used more than "straight", because calling someone or something "gay" is considered an insult. If you called someone or something "straight" that probably would not be considered an insult.

Gay became the buzzword for the homosexual community many years ago. I think it helped being them out of the sneeze of perception to being accepted as just “different”
