Right now the only state where it is legal to get married, and call it a marriage, is Massachusetts. There are a few other states that will permit a 'Civil Union' between two people of the same gender. Still others will allow a 'domestic partnership.'

There are lots of countries in Europe that permit gay marriage, Sweden among them.

Since marriage rights (inheritance, taxation, etc.) are controlled and give by the state, and the US is founded on the separation of church and state, it SHOULD be legal in all 50 states. Unfortunately some bigoted religious zealots continue to campaign against this. I wish they would try justice, tolerance and understanding for a change - WWJD?

Its not illegal to get married to someone of the same sex, in the sense that they cant arrest you and charge you with a crime. But most states will not issue a marriage license to same sex couples.
There are churches in almost every state that will performe a same sex ceremony, and this is not illegal, but it has no legal standing as a marriage either.

The only state where it is fully legal in the sense that the state will issue a license is Massachusetts.

They will have to go either to Massachusets or out of the country (out of the country could be very romantic for a honeymoon).
