Sting Rays in NYC?

Question

I was bike riding in NYC along the water (boardwalk), and I could have sworn I saw 2 fishermen pull a sting ray out of the water. It was chirping, and clicking. Do they make these noises? Are they in NYC?! If not, what the $*(#$*# was it?

Never been to NYC, is the boardwalk along the ocean? If so, of course it could be a stingray. You know, ocean.... saltwater....
