Why is the ocean blue?

The ocean is blue because not only does the sea cut straight through underwater salt mines making it salty but also it cuts right into vast underground chlorine mines as well. These chlorine mines have a similar effect the commercial product you can buy that makes your pool blue. But because the ocean is deeper it appear bluer than your pool.

In addition, the Caribbean is host to the largest underwater chlorine mines and thus the ocean is bluer in the Caribbean than it is most other places on earth.

Why is the ocean blue - really?

The ocean is blue for reasons that are similar to why the sky is blue. Sunlight collides with air molecules and scatters blue light specials because the wavelength is short than the red light district and thus scatters more.

Once this blue light passes through the atmosphere and strikes the water molecules, thus taking a double hit, the blue light is scattered even more than Scatman Caruthers and the ocean even appears bluer than the sky. The ocean's water both reflects and intensifies, lifts and separates the blue light.

The sea reflects the colour of the sky. Clouds make it look dim and dismal. In coastal waters there is also the effect of silt from rivers being washed into the sea. For example, around Hong Kong the sea is almost always a lovely blue, but never at the mouth of the Pearl River. I've been told that the Amazon turns the Atlantic a muddy colour for hundreds of kilometres out to sea.

The condition you are referring to is turbidity. Turbidity is dependent upon silt, chemicals and other things floating in the waters. Generally the waters near land are more turbid that the waters in the middle of the oceans. Whenever there are lakes and rivers draining into seas the waters will be murky. If you have a desert next to the water then you'd expect the water to be clear. The surface water runoff from the land has a great deal to do with the clarity of the waters.

Hi Curls
The sea like any water does not have a colour, unless something colours it like silt sea weed etc.
The main reason the sea is so blue abroad is that the colour of the sea is a reflection of the sky which is usually grey here and blue in the nice sunny places we go on holiday. The sand under shallow water also highlights this colour making it a lovely turquoise. Oh i want to go on holiday

in warm countries, the warmth from the sun lights up the water to make it clear. in the UK, its not murky, just dark because the sun shines different there.

I think it has more to do with the type of dirt on the bottom of the ocean. If it is sandy then the water will be clear. If it is muddy then the water will be cloudy and brown.
