Yes, there's a tiny bit of truth to that and I mean really tiny. The falls are part of the niagara escarpment- a deep gouge in the landscape which cover hundreds of miles which was dug by mammoth glaciers a very long time ago. Because of the constant rushing water of the falls, they actually recede further downstream daily. The force of the water breaks away the rock underneath. I think what they mean when they say man made is that man has intervened to try and slow down this erosion of the rock ledge and thereby slow down the rate of time that the falls move down stream. Men have done this by artificially slowing the water speed and volume that goes over the falls by use of dams and hydroelectric stations. Other interventions by man have modified the shape of the falls and the surrounding rock walls and ledges. Or this may be a totally philosophical question about creationism and God. Hope this helped.

Rumors Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is foremost a natural occurence, however man has interfered with it on occasion, when rocks have falled into the niagara river blocking the flow . PBS recently showed the history of Niagara Falls , you might want to go to the Pbs website and check out owning the video.

I've lived in Niagara all my life and the Falls are a natural phenomenon that sometimes needs a little help from its friends to continue.

Toronto is a lot bigger and so there will be more to do, but Niagara Falls has fireworks and things like that on New Year's Eve. I would personally go with Toronto, because I got to Niagara Falls all the time and think it's a bit on the touristy side.

Not man made, but certainly affected by man.

Every night, a percentage of the water (I've heard up to 80%, can't verify) is diverted to the Niagara power authority generating station, which reduces the volume of water flowing over the falls therby reducing the rate that erosion is taking place.

In the 70's, the entire flow was stopped (not sure why), and all the water was diverted for a small period of time.

The answers are fantastic..couldnt do better myself. Sooooo..more information the falls run about 60 to 75 percent actually over the falls as the water is channeled for power. All of the shots we see of the falls are from the Canadian side of Niagara river. The American falls are actually farther north than the Canadian falls. And I think it was in 1912 that they actually froze solid. I have a picture..

The falls existed before man got involved but they

1. siphon off a good percentage (majority?) of water to power generators for New York.
2. used explosives to shape the falls so that it had more of an aesthetic quality.

Completely false. The falls are a naturally occuring phenomenon resulting from millenia of hydrogeologic activity. Did your source also tell you that the lunar landings were filmed in the deserts of Arizona?
