I am trying out for American Idol this year. I know that making it through is not simply if you can sing what I would like to know is what can I do to make it through to the second round

First you have to make it past the 'gate-keepers' before you even reach round one! Before you audition get some objective people to listen to you sing your top 5 to 10 song choices - then practice, practice, practice your top 3 - without the music!
Pick something fun and flattering to wear, but not too weird. Gimmicks will get you on tv but not into the 2nd round.
If you make it in to see S/R/P then give it your all - don't oversing but do put the proper emotion into your voice. Be current - but try not to sing the same darn song that everyone else is doing.
