Broad in the beam is referring to a young lady's behind. It means that the girl has a bigger bum or wide hips (or both).

I've never heard of the old cookie duster.

Going to the submarine races is a euphemism for when people go to "park". We used to say that or that we were going whale watching. I live in inland Canada so whale watching or submarine races were impossible. When you said that, everyone knew exactly what you were really going to do.

You can tell your daughter that I am proof that you aren't nuts and that you're not making that stuff up!

When I was a teenager, it was a joke - "They went down to the boat dock to watch the submarine races." I was a good girl; I never went!

I haven't heard the phrases before, but that does not mean that you are making them up. There are so many silly phrases in the English language that are regional, but becomming more widespread via travel and the internet. Could you please broaden my mind by sharing the meanings of these phrases?

I am familiar with "broad in the beam" - but where I grew up people would say that you are looking "thick". And they don't mean "stupid".
