having a transvaginal ultrasound at 7 weeks pregnant to rule out ectopic pregnancy (although no evidence to suggest that) and to see if it is a multiple pregnancy (due to taking progesterone). want to know if this is normal and safe.

Transvaginal ultrasound is very safe and non-invasive procedure. For any procedure, you need to weigh the risks and benefits. Ultrasound uses sound waves to create a two dimensional picture of the underlying tissue. There is no radiation used. The procedure is not surgical nor does it require general anesthesia. In addition, ectopic pregnancies are life threatening. Whenever there is a possibility of an ectopic pregnancy, it is always better to err on the side of caution. Ultrasound can rule out an ectopic pregnancy. As for multiple pregnancy, you are very early in your pregnancy so an ultrasound is useful but not definitive.

YES, its the best kind. I had to get one when i was about 8 or 9 weeks pregnant because i started bleeding. Im as well on progestrone. went through the blood work after every period, and watching my surge. but yes honey this is safe nothing to worry about. in my case my daughter had seperated from the uteran wall but after a few days of rest it was fine....i did have to go back @ 12 weeks to make sure everything was still fine. she is now 4 yrs old

There is no risk with the procedure. Thats the only way to do an ultra sound when you are this early in pregnancy. Stop worrying. If it was gonna hurt they wouldn't do it.

There's a minor risk associated with any medical procedure, but your doctor obviously feels that the gains outweigh the risk.

There is no danger in getting one of these. I have had them before...no big deal.
