yes, they do have a short memory span, but just because they can't remember the've been fed doesn't mean they have to be fed again. once a day is quite enough.

Fish will stop eating when they are full. A goldfish will not bust it's stomach if you feed them for five minutes. In fact, most advice is that you feed the fish the amount that they will eat in about five minutes. The problem that occurs if you overfeed goldfish is that food will settle to the bottom cause bacteria growth. This in turn can cause diseases which would kill the fish.

I don't know about the statistical studies... My mother had fish who remembered all sorts of thing. Especially about feeding time! She would always tap on the top of the water and they would rise to the surface. One day, my cat decided to drink out of the fish bowl (no, not to catch the fish but just because it was convenient). The fish did as they were conditioned to do - They rose to the surface for feeding - And bit the cat's tongue!
So, maybe they have longer memories than studies suggest!

Goldfish are like pigs, they nibble things all the time. Feed them once is enough for the day. It has nothing to do with their memories!

At the very least eating too much will make your fish ill and they could die so its best to feed them as directed on the fish food, also if you overfeed them they poo a lot and muck up the water which is bad for them too.

No, when they are full, they stop eating. Uneaten food will then decay into ammonia causing many, many problems unless you are doing your regular partial water changes.

Regular = weekly
Partial = 25-30%

They will definitely eat themselves to death, but it's OK to let them go 2 or 3 days without food.
